nose hairs

I have spent a lot of time in poetry focused writer’s groups. These are mostly populated by people who for some inexplicable reason love the writing of Whitman, Ginsberg, and the like. When I get my turn to share my work and hear critiques, these folks generally have only one thing to say, which is something along the lines of, “Just say what you feel, man! Just write what you feel! It’s all about what you feel, man!!” Well, alright, at the moment, this what I feel, man!

nose hairs

they stand in line
  stiff and stark
rank and file
  on the march

merciless soldiers
  raised from hell
heft their siege
  in endless swell

rifles raised
  with bayonettes
they stab their way
  with no regrets

shooting always
  toward the brain
with deadly force
  unfailing aim

for each one pulled
  from out the race
a dozen rise
  to fill their place

marching always
  on the brain
marching till i
  go insane

Fizzle

This is something along the lines of impressionist poetry.

Fizzle

I’ll grant you dreams
  which fold the beams
    of light until
      your shadow gleams

I’ll grant you shame
  to bless your name
    with blissful guilt
      and narrow fame

I’ll grant you tears
  a moment’s fears
    a glimpse of joy
      the span of years

I’ll grant you pain
  the crushing reign
    of silence forced
      across your vane

I’ll grant you space
  to briefly trace
    the edges of
      your aging face

I’ll grant you breath
  filled brim with wrath
    a glass of wine
      to drink your death

Beautiful Tears

This was written for an online friend after she experienced a rather bitter loss.

Beautiful Tears

For Luschka Van Olsen

Try to imagine
Crystal drops
Gentle wonder
Welling forth
Love unfettered
From heart benign…
These are your tears
Your beautiful tears

Try to fathom
Melting snowflakes
Downwardly dancing
Expressing love
From depths of pain
Longing loss
Unyielding hope…
These are your tears
Your beautiful tears

Try to envision
Lone stars falling
From star-speckled depths
Streaking aloft
Dreaming trails
Of unbridled faith…
These are your tears
Your beautiful tears
